Strangest sounds & signals detected from space.

Although it may seem deathly quiet since sound doesn't travel in space, the universe is actually quite noisy.Almost every celestial body emits radio waves which are inaudible to human ears, but can be picked up by special receivers & equipment. There have been many signals as well as sounds that have been detected & heard from space since the advent of radio technology. And in the more than half century of mankind's Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence [SETI] .

WOW! SIGNAL

wow signal

A 72 second signal from nearly 200 light years away was recorded on August 15 ,1977 by The Big Ear Telescope at Ohio state university. Astronomer Jerry Ehman encircled the sequence 6EQUJ5, which represented the varying intensity of the electromagnetic signal, then wrote WOW! on the printout.None of many many theories put forward could explain the signal anomaly which as not detected since, & remains to date the best candidate for an extraterrestrial radio transmission ever received.

RADIO SOURCE SHGB02+14A

Radio Source SHGB02+14A

Another SETI candidate was discovered in March 2003 when a puzzling radio signal source was observed 3x for a total of 1 minute at a frequency of about 1420 MHz. Skeptics pointed out this could not be alien signal since it was weak ,was from a region between constellation Pisces & Aries which has no observable star & the frequency corresponds to a planet spinning 40x faster than Earth.

FAST RADIO BURSTS

FRBs , one of the space's most mysterious signals, have been on the news lately. Often called "Cosmic Whistles" detected only by radio telescopes, they lost just milliseconds but generate as much energy as the Sun in a day. Although it is essential that 2000 FRBs occur daily in the universe, only 17 have been spotted so far , the first one is 2007 . The exact cause for this powerful blasts is unknown but scientist theorize that they could be flares from magnetars [highly magnetized neutron stars] or the collision of 2 neutron stars forming a black hole.

Spooky space sounds

EARTH'S CHORUS

The "chorus" sounds like birds chirping , is a well known phenomenon that could be picked up by the radio receivers usually in the morning. The radio waves with in the Earth's magnetosphere are at frequencies audible to humans & have been recorded by scientific instruments aboard satellites orbiting Earth. We know where they're coming from, but how they are produced is still a question mark?.

SATURN WEIRD SOUNDS

The Cassini spacecraft, which has been studying Saturn the past 19 years , detected an array of radio transmission with variable time & frequency in 2002, which sounded like eerie noises .All planets emits radio waves & scientist surmise the sounds may have come from auroras near Saturn's poles, akin to Earth's own auroral radio emissions.

SINGING COMET

ESA'S Rosetta launched in march 2004 & traveled 6.4billion km to rendezvous with giant comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in August 2014. Approaching within 100km of the comet, the spacecraft picked up a strange "Song" coming from the surface of 67P. One theory is that the sounds are released from the surface & are electrically charged through ionization by the magnetic field around the comet.

SPACE ROAR

Absolute Radiometer for Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Diffuse Emission (ARCADE) is a program which utilizes high-altitude balloon instrument package intended to measure the heating of the universe by the first stars and galaxies after the big bang and search for the signal of relic decay or annihilation
Space Roar

In 2006, a NASA balloon carrying instruments to measure the heating of the universe by first generation stars was flown to a altitude of 120,000 ft. Researchers in 2009 revealed that the instruments on board detected cosmic radio noise that boomed 6x louder than expected. Stars & gases in the rim of Milky Way have been ruled out as possible causes & the "space roar " as it has come to be known remains an enigma.

INTERSTELLAR NOISE

The plasma wave instrument on NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft captured these sounds of dense plasma or ionized gas, vibrating in interstellar space. There were 2 times the instrument heard these vibrations:OCT -NOV 2012 & APR-MAY 2013. Scientist noticed that each occurrence involved a rising tone. The dashed line indicates that the rising tones follow the same slope. This means a continuously increasing density. The graphic shows the waves, which indicates the density of the plasma. color indicates the intensity of the waves, or how "load " they are. Red indicates the loudest waves & blue indicates the weakest.
